Backyard Margaritas

Let’s. Talk. Margaritas. The most refreshing cocktail that can be easily ruined by a super shitty margarita mix. Honest to god there are few things more disappointing than getting a super sweet, super artificial tasting marg when you’re hoping for a drink that’s refreshing & lime-y to it’s core. With the busy week we’ve had & it being Cinco, I tackled my own version of margs that was sans all things artificial to create the perfect Backyard Marg. No low calorie or “fresh” pre-made mixes - just a bunch of limes, a little elbow grease, and my husbands tequila stash.

My prep entailed combing through margarita recipes and even trolling drink menus of my favorite Mexican restaurants to see what they’re saying they put in this tasty drink. A consistent ingredient was agave - something I’d never even brought into my house before but holy shit it was necessary for this margarita action.

Necessary step number 2 - orange. Just a splash of fresh orange juice just changes things from strictly lime juice cocktail. Just a little balance, ya know?

Bottomline - cocktails aren’t something that go down often in this house, and when I treat myself it’s worth it to skip to pre-made fruit juices and concentrates, & get down with the good stuff. These are my new go-to for any at-home fiestas, and standard for a quality at-home cocktail.

For the Margaritas

  • 1 c. fresh lime juice (~6 limes), plus extra limes for serving

  • 1 orange, juiced

  • 1/3 c. water

  • 1 1/2 c. silver tequila

  • 1/2 c. agave syrup

Place all the ingredients in a pitcher and set aside in the fridge to chill (at least an hour). Cut another lime into wedges. Run a lime over the edge of your serving glasses, and dip into a shallow bowl filled with salt. Add in a handful of ice & pour in the chilled margs. Add in a slice of lime for serving.
